Kate has worked her whole life to become a top chef in New York City, everything she thought she knew and wanted is about to be tested when she becomes the guardian of her young niece Zoe.

Kate runs her kitchen in a rather aggressive way and takes everything about her food very personally, this often leads to clashes with Paula who owns the restaurant. She doesn’t have any relationships away from work, although constantly needs to fight away the advances of one of her neighbours who quite frankly just comes across as a creep.
When her sister and Zoe are on there way for visit to NYC a tradegy of a car crash happens. Kate must then become the guardian of her young niece who she doesn’t really know that well. She also has no idea how to raise a child, and what needs to be done for her. This results in some rather risky decisions and trying to balance her job which is mainly on a night. Zoe has to adapt with the death of her mother, moving to a new city, starting a new school and having an Aunt who has no clue what to do with her!
Kate has to reduce her hours at work to come to terms with everything, but when she is intimidated by a new chef who has started she decides she needs to fight for what is hers. She cannot really understand that Nick actually wanted to work with her, naturally we know the direction that this is going to go (it is a rom-com remember) it does create a nice relationship not only for Kate but Zoe as well.
It’s been years since I last watched this film and being a huge Catherine Zeta-Jones fan I really do still find myself enjoying it. By no means is it groundbreaking and pretty much fits into the 00s formula for romantic comedy films. That therefore means that is nice, you know a nice easy watch with some heatbreaking moments and some lovely moments all mixed together. Although I feel we should have had a lot more food scenes. Aaron Eckhart is charming enough in this one, and this made me remember that during the 00s he really did have some good roles alongside some top leading ladies.
This was recently added to Netflix in the UK and I really liked seeing that it hit the top 10 in the film chart and that people who probably hadn’t even heard of this film gave it a chance.
