The Pale Blue Eye (2022) Review

In 1830, retired detective Augustus Landor is hired to investigate the murder of a West Point cadet, his progress is stalled by the cadets’ code of silence and must try and get at least one of them to help unravel the case. That man being Cadet Edgar Allan Poe.

⭐️⭐️

Landor was living alone since the death of his wife and his daughter had disappeared a few years earlier. Taking on this case would then consume his life. Cadet Leroy Fry had been found hanged, but his heart had also been removed from his body as it lay in the morgue. Landor was then tasked to find out not only who did it but why they did it. Landor notices that he did not hang himself though it was indeed murder.

Edgar Allan Poe ends up helping Landor after he expresses an interest in the case, they manage to find that the writing on the note fragment was asking Fry to a secret meeting. More events occur that lead them to believe that some kind of black magic rituals are taking place.

Plenty of twists and turns continue as more cadets go missing and turn up murdered, will they ever be able to work out who is behind it. Or does the real story of why make it actually feel ok?

I have to admit that I was quite looking forward to this film, I mean Christian Bale is easily one of my all time favourite actors. He never fails to take on interesting roles and I guess this was a good role. I just didn’t find myself engaged in the story and thought it was too slow and boring at times to keep me entertained. Maybe, just maybe if this had been a cinema release film I might have been more engaged? I know that might seem like a very strange thing to state, but I am sure a lot of people will understand what I mean with that statement.

Harry Melling, most known still from the Harry Potter films has been taking on some very good and impressive roles within very well respected films and tv series’ which is really good to see. The same with this it was a good performance. Adding in a rather good supporting cast with Timothy Spall, Toby Jones, Robert Duvall and Gillian Anderson. I just felt as though we deserved better with them all.

  1. Hi Caz, did you ever review ‘Yesterday’ about the music of the Beatles. I saw it last night and wondered what you thought of it?
    Thanks

  2. I looked forward to this one too and went in assuming it would be a slow burn and drab. But it was a little too slow, or something, and I kept getting bored with it and turning it off. I finally just finished the last act and though I saw something like it coming, the way it was talked out in the dialog I found it interesting, creepy, and wonder now if I need to go back and give it a second watch to see if I like it better.
