Meg 2: The Trench (2023) Review

A research team stumbles upon a mining operation deep in the ocean, surrounded by many megs!

⭐️⭐️

A sequel to the 2018 film The Meg we pick up with Jonas Taylor who has been doing his best to protect Meiying. Although her curiosity is always going to be a downfall, although her knowledge is not to be frowned upon given the situations they end up in.

The thing with this film is that it felt like two separate films then merged together and that massively let it down. I thought the opening 20-30 minutes (I’m guesstimating as didn’t check my watch or anything) was rather engaging and a little bit on edge. You know being in the water and having to get back to base without a Meg or anything else getting them and having to walk the distance with only a small amount of oxygen.

That all seemed to be over rather quickly which was a shame as that could have built a lot of tension for longer. Anyway everything then went rather crazy and quite frankly it seemed impossible for certain characters to actually die, which created some funny moments although not fully sure if it was meant to then be funny.

That factor of actually laughing though is the reason I ended up giving the film two stars and not one star, because quite frankly that meant it was entertaining in some way! The plot wasn’t really anything to get excited about in terms of twists because it was all pretty obvious.

Let’s talk about the batshit crazy opening with some dinosaur style water beast things that could also go on land that rocked up towards the end. Although despite the number of Meg’s attacking the huge octopus was probably even worse, yet not one character even acknowledged that.

So if you want to see Jason Statham get all angry and fight some sharks then go on have some fun with this one! I feel as though I am putting it in the same place as Snakes on a Plane.

  1. Sad to see such wasted potential. Some mindless excitement is great but there was an awesome monster, good actors, and this could have been so much more. I’ll pick it up on streaming one night just to see the shark and fast forward through the rest. Thanks for an honest review about it.
