My Old Ass (2024) Review

When getting high one night Elliott comes face to face with her 39 year old self, but when her “old ass” delivers a warning she must assess everything she thought she knew.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

On her 18th birthday Elliott plans on spending time with her best friends and also attempts to start a relationship with Chelsea a girl she has been obsessed with for many years, her family awaiting at home to surprise her. When they take hallucingenic mushrooms she doesn’t think it has any impact on her but a woman then appears next to her.

To create a bigger scene of this it is claimed that she is her older self, and that she is a PhD student at 39 years old. She begs for life changing advice and the main part is bonding with her family as she will be leaving soon for college, I mean that is not what your 18 year old self wants to hear really is it! In her phone she puts her number labelled “My Old Ass” and from then conversations happen between young and old. The main thing though was to stay away from Chad, without any explanation.

The premise of the film is such a wonderful idea and is very thought provoking, I guess the fact that I am only two years off that 39 year old character (which is quite utterly terrifying) but it makes you wonder what it would be like to see yourself in that young and somewhat innocent form. Life hasn’t really hit you yet at 18 and you would already know the decisions and moments that shape who you become, both good and bad.

That is seriously how deeply the film hit me and I found myself really enjoying it and afterall the biggest message from it is that you are going to make choices and mistakes, some of which are inveitable and you cannot prevent yourself. Partly found that reassuring as we know that friends always offer good advice and want the best for you, but in the end it comes down to what you really want.

All of that emotional journey is made possible because of the brilliant performances from both Maisy Stella and Aubrey Plaza, combining as Elliott in such a good manner. Adding in some comedy and funny moments makes certain parts a bit lighter as well.

  1. This just dropped on Amazon and I can’t wait to see it! Will read your review after…I am a HUGE Aubrey Plaza fan! Got to see her live on stage off Broadway in “Danny And The Deep Blue Sea” and she was mesmerizing!
